John D. Michenfelder

A los 73 años de edad, después de una vida plenamente productiva, John D. Michenfelder, dejó un gran vacío en la Anestesiología y en la Neuroanestesiología.

Originario de St. Louis, inició su residencia en anestesiología en 1958 en la Clínica Mayo y se unió al staff de anestesia neuroquirúrgica en 1961. En 1966 consiguió su primer grant de los Institutos Nacionales de de Salud de los EUA, para dedicarse a la investigación del flujo sanguíneo y metabolismo cerebral. Fue miembro del Comité Editorial de la revista Anesthesiology durante 6 años para después ser nombrado Director Editorial (1979 – 1985). Fue galardonado con la Conferencia Rovenstine de la American Society of Anesthesiologists y el título de su conferencia fue: Neuroanesthesia and the Achievement of Professional Respect.

 A John D. Michenfelder se le reconoce como el padre de la Neuroanestesiología, término que el acuñó en 1969 y que utilizó a pesar de diferentes objeciones por parte de los revisores quienes preferían el término Anestesia en Neurocirugía. Fue el primer Presidente de la Society of Neurosurgical Anesthesia and Neurologic Supportive Care que después cambió su nombre por el de Society of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology and Critical Care.

A través de su vida profesional se le reconocen muchas anécdotas, fumador empedernido, se decía que su oficina emanaba humo todo el día, y gracias a el se reconoce a la Neuroanestesiología como una nueva especialidad. Fue el quien decía que durante muchos años hemos usado en halotano en pacientes neuroquirúrgicos sin mayor riesgo para el paciente, siempre y cuando se conozca lo que hace sobre la fisiología cerebral.

Se retiró en 1993, y de dedicó a abrazar su pasatiempos con precisión, pasión y curiosidad intelectual, construyó un museo de barcos y continuó escribiendo sobre Churchill y jardinería.

A su muerte, dejó una gran cantidad de seguidores en el mundo y sentó las bases modernas del conocimiento del metabolismo cerebral, los efectos de los anestésicos sobre el flujo sanguíneo cerebral y sobre todo, un gran respeto profesional.
